FAQs
What can I expect in my first appointment?
In your first session, we’ll take time to hear your story; what’s bringing you in, what your goals are, and how you’d like to feel. Then we’ll create an individualised treatment plan. Your initial visit may combine acupuncture, herbal medicine, and/or bodywork depending on what we agree is best for you.
Do I need to fill out intake forms beforehand?
Yes. Once you’ve booked your session, you’ll receive new-patient forms to complete ahead of time. They allow us to use our in-session time listening and working rather than gathering basic information, so please aim to finish them at least 48 hours before your appointment.
Should I bring my blood tests, scans or other medical information?
Absolutely. If you have recent test results or reports from other practitioners, please send them through or bring them along. They help me build a richer picture of your health and tailor treatment more precisely to your needs.
Can I claim treatment on private health insurance?
In many cases yes. Acupuncture is often covered under private health insurance, depending on your fund and level of cover. Herbal medicine or certain combinations may or may not be included, so it’s best to check your specific policy.
How does Chinese herbal medicine work, and can it be used if I’m already taking Western medications?
Chinese herbal medicine supports the body’s internal balance and has been used for thousands of years. Many formulas in Australia undergo rigorous testing for safety and quality.
Yes, you can use herbal medicine along with Western medications, but it’s important you share all medications and supplements you’re taking so we can minimise interactions and ensure safe synergy.
What should I wear?
If you can, wear something comfortable and loose-fitting so you feel relaxed and so I can gently access areas as needed for acupuncture or bodywork.
Should I eat before treatment?
It’s best to have a light meal around two hours before your appointment so you’re neither too hungry nor uncomfortably full.
Is acupuncture painful?
Acupuncture needles are very fine — much thinner than a typical medical needle. Some people feel hardly anything; others feel a light “pinch” or warm/tingly sensation. These sensations usually ease quickly and many clients feel deeply relaxed (some even fall asleep).
If you’re nervous about needles we can begin more gently, using fewer needles or exploring bodywork/herbs first.
Is acupuncture safe? Are there side-effects?
Yes — when delivered by a registered practitioner, acupuncture is very safe. Mild side-effects are possible: slight bruising, a bit of soreness around needle sites, temporary tiredness or light-headedness. If you’re on blood-thinners, pregnant, or feeling unwell, be sure to let me know so we can treat safely together. Extremely rare, but serious side effects can apply to specific points, which if relevant, will be discussed with you prior to treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
That depends on your situation. Some issues resolve quickly; others, especially longer-standing concerns, benefit from a series of sessions. We’ll discuss a tailored plan at your first visit: often starting more frequently, then settling into a maintenance rhythm once things are moving in the right direction.
I’m curious but not sure if this is right for me — what should I do?
That’s totally okay. I offer a short call-back conversation so we can chat about what’s going on for you, see if acupuncture or East Asian therapies might be a good fit, and decide together what the next best step is. No obligation, information.
